Sympathetic Decorating: 1930’s Kitchen Cool

June 25, 2015 By jbmumofone 16 Comments

As regular readers will know we moved late last year from the suburbs of Bristol to beautiful, rural Devon.  A huge change in lifestyle for us and also an entirely different house style.

We left behind our (damp) Victorian terrace and have moved into a (thankfully not yet damp) 1930’s semi.  We chose this house in part because it does not need a huge amount of work doing to it but one room we do wish to change is the kitchen.

My kitchen

Whilst we are fairly happy with the layout of the current kitchen it is not of great quality.  The flooring is chipped, the cupboards are peeling and the kick-boards fall out at least three or four times a week.  More than that though the style is just not really in keeping with a 1930’s property.  Kitchens back then had an entirely different feel.

While I am not entirely sure we can go all out 1930’s it would be nice to take some inspiration from this and decorate a little more sympathetically to the period of the house.

Here are a few items currently on my wish list:

Farmhouse sink

This simple white Kohler Whitehaven farmhouse kitchen sink, $1236.75.  Wayfair.

Mosaic vinyl flooring. carpetright.com

30’s style easy to clean and impossible to chip mosaic vinyl flooring, £13.59m².  CarpetRight.

30's Deco bowls

These Vintage Deco Au Lait bowls in green, ¢84.00.  Burke Decor.

1930's parlour style flush-mount light

1930’s parlour style flush-mount light, ¢55.10.  Blue Fly.

1930’s Chevron Riviera bistro chairs, £325.00.  Serena and Lily

So what do you think?  Does the period of the house influence your decorating choices or are you all for moving with the times?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

This post is brought to you in association with CarpetRight however all words and opinions are my own.

That sink is MASSIVE and would be ideal for keeping hedgehogs in.

Oh it would be amazing if you did it in period. Although I’m not sure how you’d fit in the mod-cons.

Those bowls are gorgeous, I love the Art Deco era.

That looks so lovely, I could go for a 1930’s kitchen quite easily. Our kitchen is looking very tired now and I am looking for kitchen inspiration and that sink is so gorgeous, I could just see one on those in my new kitchen

SUCH a big project though. We are taking our time a) to save the money and b) to make sure we get it right!

That sink and floor! What a lovely idea to keep the kitchen in the style of the age of the house.

So many gorgeous inspirational things there… I have a strange mixture of influences in our house… Lots of Danish stuff, a few family pieces, and now quite a bit of Bavarian stuff as well… Goodness knows what our forever house will look like one day! 😀

It’s nice to see an old fashioned kitchen that even I don’t remember! All this stuff re 1970s brings me out in hives because I remember it the first time round! Looks like some super inspiring stuff for you and lovely to keep it traditional. My house is 1940s and I ripped out all the picture rails and tiny skirtings, so no, is the answer to your quesiton! Good luck 🙂

I love the style of old kitchens and that one you’ve shared is just gorgeous. I’d love for mine to look like that but I’m pretty sure my husband would hate it just as much as I love it x

No the age of my house does not thankfully, as mine was built back in the 1800’s lol! Great choices, enjoy redoing your kitchen. Mich x

I can totally see why you want that farmhouse sink – it’s so pretty and would make such a cute feature in a 1930s kitchen with a modern twist x
