Following the success of learning shapes using peg monsters, I devised a very similar game for learning numbers with the boy. Although he seems pretty good at counting I am not sure how much he recognises actual numerals yet so I think this might help.
This time however we made a very hungry caterpillar.
This we constructed in exactly the same way as the peg monster. Here is how to do it.
First paint a wooden clothes peg green and allow to dry. Stick two googley eyes to a red pom pom to form the head. When the peg is dry coat one side with glue and stick on your head and some smaller green pom poms behind for the body.
For something to eat I made the following which is available to download for free here Hungry Caterpillar Counting Page-1
Simply cut out each number, and corresponding pictures, and back with coloured card. I decided to laminate mine too in the hope that they may last a while!
Now he has something to eat. Simply pick a number and let your toddler do the feeding!
Skills your toddler will learn:
Number recognition
Fine motor skills – pincer grip

This is such a good idea. I’m trying to get little man to turn his numbers so this would be a huge help

Oh great, I hope it helps! I am trying to think of more games to help my son. He is great at counting but I think number recognition is a bit trickier for them.
