We are at the very exciting stage with The Boy of beginning to learn to read. His letter recognition is now pretty good so we are just starting to practice some simple words.
To help him with this today we decided to make our normal walk into town a bit of a game inspired by this treasure hunt over at Me and My Shadow.
I printed out some simple words, things we could easily spot, and then laminated the sheet so that it will wipe clean. I then punched two holes in the bottom and threaded some ribbon so that it can hang easily around his neck.
Then, armed with a felt tip we set off on our hunt. I am pleased to report we managed to tick them all off.
The Boy really enjoyed it and it seems to have helped him a little. I hope to do a few mores sheets and we plan to make this a regular part of our walk to nursery.
How did you start to teach your child to read? All and any tips most welcome.

Ooh – that is SUCH a lovely idea! I was only looking for a bit of reading practice inspiration last night so may well have to get laminating! x

I use the laminator SO MUCH now it is ridiculous! I bought it completely at random after popping in to Aldi for some bread.

This is such a clever idea and a great way to make the walk to nursery a little more interesting. Amy has only just started to show a real interest in letters, so we’re still some time away from activities like this, but I’ll definitely pin this for a later point x

Oh thank you. I don’t know how the world survived without pinterest LOL.

I love this idea and might use it for my girls over half term when we are out and about. they can already read but love a treasure hunt and makes them more observant too

Missie Lizzie was the inspiration Mari and she has some fab free printables with pictures etc over on her post which your kids might find more of a challenge.
