Millions of people in the UK, and many other parts of the world, keep their homes warm using heating oil. Provided you maintain the boiler properly an oil fuelled heating system is a very good way to heat your house. Plus, as you
will see, there are lots of ways for you to keep the cost down.
Find a good supplier in your area.
It is especially important to find a good heating oil supplier. Professional well-established firms like Emo oil sell good quality oil and do so for a good price.
Watch out for scammers.
You should always shop around to get the best deal, but you need to be a bit careful. If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is. The last thing you need is to take delivery of oil that has been mixed with a little water. Once in
the tank, the two will separate and the water will sink to the bottom of your tank. When the oil is all gone you will end up pumping water into your boiler. Once water gets into your system it can cause a lot of damage and it is very
hard, and expensive, to get out again.
The same is true if there are particulates floating in the oil. Once in your tank it will eventually sink to the bottom of your tank. However, some of it will inevitably get into your boiler. Once there, it can cause damage. Even if you
are lucky, and it does not get into your heating system it will still be sitting at the bottom of your tank. Gradually, it will build up and you will have to pay to have the hose leading down into the tank shortened to stop the silt getting
sucked into your heating system.
As you can see, it really is important to buy from a good supplier and not be tempted by someone who offers cheap oil that is not good quality. However, that does not mean that good deals do not exist for this fuel. Far from it, here
are a few tips to help you to find them.
Track the oil price.
How much you pay for your home heating oil, is largely dependent on the price of crude oil. When the price per barrel falls fairly soon after so does the cost of domestic heating oil. So, if you see the price of oil falling that is the
time to start ringing around for deals. You can find out more about the connection between the price of crude and home heating oil and how to track it, here.
Help your supplier to help you.
Most suppliers understand that their clients want to save money. To help them to do this some have come up with new ways for their customers to order their oil. Understandably, heating oil distributors like to go out with a full tanker and deliver to customers in one area. Doing so saves them time, driving time and diesel. As a result, some firms give their customers the option to have heating oil delivered on the day of the week they are normally in a specific area. When a customer agrees to do this the price of their heating oil is normally lower than if they opted to have it delivered on a different day.
