What was the most important day in your life so far? Your wedding day? The birthday of your child? The day you got some really good news or passed an exam?
I imagine it is different for all of us.
What you probably didn’t do that day was get up before daybreak, leave the comfort of your warm comfy bed, and head out to the Cornish coastline in order to capture a photograph of the dawn sky.
If your special day happens to be after the 21st June 2005 though fear not. Someone else did. Gavan Goulder did exactly this to commemorate the birth of a son to a close friend, and later the birth of his own daughter in 2005. And soon after, ‘The Day That…” was born.
Earlier this week I was delighted to receive my very own framed, mounted picture taken on the morning that W was born. It looks pretty chilly out there.
When I was asked to review this item I immediately headed on over to the website www.thedaythat.co.uk. There, using a very simple online calender I input W’s birthday. This brought me to a display of 8 different images, some horizontal, some portrait, taken of the coastline that morning.
Another particularly lovely touch was a short note below these images from the photographer about the locations and the conditions that day.
Here is the image I chose and a description from the photographer of that morning.
As it was high tide this morning when I arrived at the beach. I decided to go over to the back of the island to start with. I love this location when I’m faced with these conditions. I was cold and with a westerly wintery wind blowing into my face, minute by minute my face was tingling with the cold, not the nicest feeling. However I found a spot that was sheltered from the wind and captured some lovely movement in the sea.

After choosing a frame I then input the occasion, first name of W and a short message to be written on the front of the mount.
This week it arrived.
And I love it.
Not just the picture but the thought every time I look at it that it was really taken THAT day. While W was taking his very first look at the world that photographer was out there capturing, and preserving a slice of it for him. Or for me. I am not sure who will get to keep it eventually. I may find it hard to part with.
